The best Dex alternative depends on why you're leaving. Dex is a personal CRM built for professional networking: it syncs your LinkedIn connections, email, calendar, and messages, and reminds you to keep in touch. If you want something simpler and private for friends, family, and the people you meet day to day, betterpal is a free-to-start iPhone and Mac app that stores everything on your own devices, with no account. If you want Dex-style automation in a different package, Mesh (formerly Clay) is the closest match.
What Dex does well
Dex (getdex.com) is aimed at people whose network lives in LinkedIn and their inbox, especially anyone who meets a lot of people for work. From Dex's own site and help docs, as of September 2026:
- LinkedIn sync. Your LinkedIn connections are added to Dex and updated about once a day, including job titles and photos. Dex notifies you when a connection changes jobs, which is a natural moment to reach out, and tracks your latest LinkedIn conversation as the "last interaction."
- A browser extension. Add someone straight from their LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter/X profile without retyping anything (browser extension).
- Email, calendar, and messaging integrations. Gmail, Google Calendar, WhatsApp, and iMessage on the Premium plan, with Outlook and multiple email accounts on Professional.
- Keep-in-touch reminders. Set how often you want to hear from someone, from monthly to yearly, and Dex tells you who's due.
- AI help. Dex describes AI features that surface context, draft messages, and suggest who to contact next. You can also text Dex by SMS or WhatsApp to log a note or set a reminder.
- Everywhere you work. iOS and Android apps, a web app, and a desktop app, plus imports from many sources and, on the Professional plan, API and Zapier access.
If your relationships mostly happen at work and online, that's a strong, well-integrated package, and LinkedIn sync in particular is its standout feature.
Dex pricing
According to Dex's pricing page (checked September 2026):
- Premium: $12/month billed annually. Mobile, web, and desktop access, LinkedIn sync for up to 2,500 connections, email and messaging integrations, map view, and custom fields.
- Professional: $20/month billed annually. Everything in Premium, plus LinkedIn sync for up to 9,000 connections, Outlook, multiple email accounts, mail merge, API/Zapier, and priority support.
- Free trial: 7 days, with a credit card required up front. Dex doesn't list a permanent free plan.
Why people look for a Dex alternative
They don't need LinkedIn at the center
Dex's strengths are professional. If the people you're trying to remember are neighbors, your kids' friends' parents, the barista, or your partner's cousins, most of them aren't LinkedIn connections, and the sync that makes Dex shine has little to work with.
Privacy and integrations
Dex works by connecting your accounts to a cloud service with an account. That's how it keeps everything updated automatically. Some people would rather their notes about friends and family never leave their own devices, and don't want to connect their inbox or messages to anything.
No free plan
Dex asks for a card to start the trial and is paid after that. If you want to try a tool for a few weeks, or you only need to track a modest number of people, a free tier is easier to live with.
More than a personal list needs
Mail merge, custom fields, API access, and connection limits are useful for networking at scale. For "remember that Priya's daughter just started school," they're extra weight.

How betterpal is different
betterpal isn't trying to be a lighter Dex. It's built for a different job: remembering the people in your life, especially right after you meet them.
- Capture in the moment. One sentence in Quick Entry ("Met James at the conference, runs a vinyl label in Austin") becomes a person plus notes. Quick Capture works from the Action Button, Back Tap, or Siri without opening the app.
- Context you'll remember later. Tags for events, places, and groups; relationships that build family trees; and a Network view that shows who knows whom.
- Birthdays and follow-ups. Birthday alerts with lead times you choose, and reminders that betterpal picks up from notes like "call in a week."
- Practice, not just storage. A recall quiz tests you on names from your own notes, which is what actually helps names stick. More on that in how to remember names.
- Private by design. No account, no analytics, no betterpal servers. Optional iPhone-to-Mac sync goes through a single file in your own iCloud Drive, and you can export everything as JSON.
To be clear about the trade-offs: betterpal has no LinkedIn, email, or calendar sync, no browser extension, no AI features, no web app, and no Android app yet. You add people yourself.
Who should choose which
Stick with Dex if…
- LinkedIn is where most of your network lives, and job-change alerts are useful to you.
- You want your contacts to stay updated automatically from email, calendar, and messages.
- You use Android or the web, or you want API and Zapier access.
Choose betterpal if…
- You mostly want to remember friends, family, neighbors, and people you meet at events and in everyday life.
- You're on iPhone (and maybe Mac) and want your notes to stay on your own devices, with no account.
- You'd like to start free and only pay if you outgrow the free tier.
Plenty of people split it: a networking tool for work contacts, and betterpal for everyone else.
