If you're looking for a Clay alternative, the first thing to know is that Clay is now called Mesh. The personal CRM that used to live at clay.earth was acquired by Automattic in 2025 and renamed Mesh in March 2026. It still works the way Clay did: it builds your contact list automatically from your email, calendar, messages, and social accounts. If you'd rather keep a small, private record of people you add yourself, with no account and no cloud service, betterpal is the alternative this page compares it with. If you want the automatic approach, Mesh is still one of the strongest options, and there are others below.
What happened to Clay?
Clay announced in June 2025 that it had joined Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Tumblr, Day One, and Beeper. In March 2026 the product was renamed Mesh and moved to the domain me.sh. Part of the reason was a naming clash with Clay.com, an unrelated sales data company. According to the announcement, the same team stayed on to run it.
So if you search "Clay personal CRM" today and land on a sales prospecting tool, that's Clay.com, a different product. The personal CRM you may have used is Mesh.
What Mesh (formerly Clay) does well
Mesh's big idea is that you shouldn't have to type your contacts in. You connect your accounts and it builds the list for you. Based on its own site and help center, as of September 2026:
- Automatic contact building. Integrations include Gmail and Outlook, Google Calendar, iMessage, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, and your address book. Mesh creates contacts for people you've emailed, met with, or texted, and shows that context on each card.
- Enriched profiles. Cards pull in photos, locations, and context about how you know each person, without you filling in fields.
- An AI assistant. Nexus lets you ask questions about your network ("who do I know in Lisbon?") and can create contacts, add notes, and manage groups. Its help page describes it as an optional add-on powered by OpenAI.
- Almost every platform. iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and web, plus an Android app launched in August 2026, which includes a business card scanner.
- Automation and teams. Zapier and Make connections, and a Teams plan for shared workspaces.
- Security basics. Mesh says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and does not sell your data or use it for advertising (security and privacy page).
If you have a large professional network spread across email, LinkedIn, and meetings, that automation saves real time. It's genuinely good at it.
Why people look for a Clay alternative
The same design that makes Mesh powerful is what sends some people looking elsewhere.
You'd rather not connect your inbox and messages
To build contacts automatically, Mesh needs access to your accounts, and your contact data is stored and processed on its servers. Mesh is open about this and describes protections for it. But some people simply don't want their email, calendar, and message history feeding a cloud service, however well secured, or an AI feature powered by a third-party model. That's a preference, not a flaw, but it's a common reason people look for an alternative.
Your list fills up with people you don't really know
An automatic import brings in everyone you've emailed or met with, including one-off vendors and conference-call attendees. If your goal is to remember the few hundred people who matter in your personal life, you may prefer a list you build on purpose, one person at a time.
Price
Mesh has a free Personal plan. Mesh Pro is about $10 a month billed annually, and Teams starts at $49 per seat per month (Mesh pricing, as of September 2026). That's fair for what it does, but more than some people want to pay to remember friends' kids' names.
You want to pay once, not every year
Mesh is sold as a subscription, and we couldn't find a one-time or lifetime option on its pricing page. If you'd rather not add another recurring charge for your address book, that alone narrows the field. Most personal CRMs are subscriptions; betterpal is one of the few that also sells a lifetime license.
More than you need
Integrations, enrichment, groups, AI chat, and automations are a lot of surface area if all you want is "who was that at Sam's wedding, and what did she say about her new job?"
Mesh vs. betterpal at a glance
betterpal takes the opposite approach: nothing is imported unless you choose to, and nothing leaves your devices. Here's a side-by-side.
| Mesh (formerly Clay) | betterpal | |
|---|---|---|
| How contacts get in | Automatically from connected email, calendar, messages, social accounts, and address book | You add people yourself (quick entry, Siri, Action Button), or import/link from iPhone Contacts |
| Email / calendar / LinkedIn sync | Yes | No |
| AI assistant | Yes (Nexus, optional add-on) | No |
| Where your data lives | Mesh's cloud service, with an account | On your device; optional sync through a single file in your own iCloud Drive. No account, no betterpal servers |
| Platforms | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, web, Android | iPhone and Mac (Android coming soon) |
| Notes, groups or tags, reminders | Yes | Yes, including reminders detected from note text |
| Relationship graph and family tree | — | Yes (Network view, Smart Connections) |
| Recall quiz for names | — | Yes |
| Team features | Yes (Teams plan) | No, personal use only |
| Price | Free Personal plan; Pro about $10/month billed annually | Free with a cap on the number of pals; Pro is $2.99/month, $19.99/year, or $39.99 once for a lifetime license. Mac app is a free download |

How betterpal is different
betterpal is built around the moment you meet someone, not around your inbox.
- Capture in one sentence. Type "Sarah from the coffee shop, graphic designer, loves hiking" into Quick Entry and betterpal pulls out the name and keeps the rest as notes. Quick Capture works from the Action Button, Back Tap, Siri, or a Lock Screen widget without opening the app.
- Find people by context. Tags for events, places, and groups, plus a Network view and Map view that show how and where your people connect.
- Actually remember them. A recall quiz tests you on names from your own notes, using the same retrieval practice described in spaced repetition for names.
- Private by design. No account, no analytics, no betterpal servers. Your data sits on your iPhone and, if you want, syncs to the Mac app through one file in your own iCloud Drive. You can export everything as JSON.
What betterpal doesn't do matters just as much here. It has no email, calendar, or LinkedIn sync, no AI enrichment, no web app, and no Windows or Android app yet. If automatic import is the point for you, betterpal isn't a replacement for Mesh.
A Clay alternative with a lifetime license
It's the reason a customer gave us for moving from Clay to betterpal: they wanted to pay once. betterpal is free to start, and betterpal Pro, which removes the cap on how many pals you can save, comes three ways:
- $2.99 a month
- $19.99 a year
- $39.99 once, a lifetime license with no renewal
Prices are App Store prices in USD and may vary by region. The Mac app is a free download and fully unlocked, so there's nothing extra to buy for the desktop. And because your data lives on your devices rather than betterpal's servers, what you've written stays readable and exportable even if you never pay a cent.
Who should choose which
Stick with Mesh if…
- You manage a large professional network and want it to build and update itself from email, calendar, and LinkedIn.
- You use Windows, Android, or a browser, or you switch between them.
- You want to ask an AI questions about your network, or share contacts with a team.
Choose betterpal if…
- You're on iPhone (and maybe Mac) and want a list of people you chose, not everyone you've ever emailed.
- You'd rather not connect your inbox or messages to a cloud service, and like that there's no account at all.
- Your goal is personal: remembering names, where you met, and the small details that make people feel remembered.
Some people use both: a tool like Mesh for work contacts, and betterpal for friends, neighbors, and the parents at school pickup.
Other Clay alternatives
If neither fits, a few other directions are worth a look:
- Dex is closest to Mesh in spirit, with strong LinkedIn sync. See our Dex alternative comparison.
- A broader roundup. Our best personal CRM apps guide compares the main options side by side.
- No app at all. If you mostly need a better habit, start with keeping notes on people you know in whatever tool you already use.
